Plataforma

Inversión en retail media en EE. UU. (2026, est.)

Peso aproximado

Amazon Advertising

~56.710 millones $

~tres cuartas partes

Walmart Connect

~5.990 millones $

~7 %

Resto (Instacart, Target, Kroger…)

El resto del mercado

—

Total EE. UU.

~69.330 millones $

100 %

Fuente: previsión de eMarketer (Retail Media Ad Spending Forecast, primer semestre de 2026). Cifras redondeadas.

Cuida tus datos propios.

How much budget do I need to get started?

What does this mean for your SME?

No hace falta reinventar tu marketing.

For years, video was the expensive part of digital marketing: filming, editing, reviewing, repeating. For an SME on a tight budget, competing on YouTube with a decent advert seemed like something only big brands could do. That’s exactly what View on Google Ads Things are about to change. Google has integrated its generative video model into its advertising platform itself, so you can now turn a product photo into a video ready for publication without leaving your account or hiring a production company.

At Vandelay, we’ve been testing it for weeks on real client accounts in Barcelona, and our preliminary verdict is twofold: it’s a tool that genuinely saves time, but it’s no magic bullet. We’re going to explain what it is, how it works and — this is what almost nobody tells you — when no You should use it exactly as it is.

What is Veo in Google Ads (and what’s Asset Studio got to do with it?)

Veo is Google’s AI-powered video generation model. What has changed in 2026 is where vive: it’s no longer just a separate app, but is now part of Asset Studio, the Google Ads platform for creating creative assets. As reported by Search Engine Land (27 March 2026), Google rolled out Veo globally within Google Ads, enabling any advertiser to create short videos directly from the campaign interface.

In practice: you upload up to three static images and Veo generates videos of up to 10 seconds with natural motion, designed for YouTube’s formats and audiences. These clips can then be converted into adverts ready for delivery using customisable templates. This is an evolution of the previous rollout of video templates and automatic video creation in Demand Gen campaigns, according to the same source.

How it works, step by step

The process, as documented and as we have seen in the accounts, is straightforward:

Go to Asset Studio within your Google Ads account, in the creative assets section.

Upload up to three images. Product photos that are clean, well-lit and have a neutral background tend to work best. Veo creates a video for each image, so you can end up with up to three different versions from a single shoot.

Describe the scene What you’re looking for: the type of movement, the style, the atmosphere. The more specific you are, the less of a gamble it’ll be.

Generate and review. You get video clips of up to 10 seconds featuring motion, ready for YouTube and for Search, Display or Performance Max campaigns.

Adjust using templates. Google allows you to combine Veo with Nano Banana to customise ad creatives: change backgrounds, adjust the message or tailor the content to the audience’s specific interests, according to Search Engine Land.

One detail that is by no means insignificant: the performance is being staged at no extra cost for advertisers. There is no waiting list or limited beta; it is available in Google Ads accounts. This is in line with the approach Google has been taking since Google Marketing Live 2026: integrate AI into the advertiser’s workflow so that creative production is no longer a bottleneck.

What really changes for an SME?

The reason why this matters is simple: on YouTube, video consistently performs better than static content, but producing it has always required time, a budget and expertise, as he points out Search Engine Land. I can see that barrier coming down. If you have a catalogue of product photos — and almost any shop or local business does — you can now venture into video formats where you wouldn’t even have considered competing before.

For us, the most interesting change isn’t “making a nice video”, but rather be able to test much more. In the past, testing five different versions of a video advert was unthinkable for an SME due to the cost. Now you can create several versions, launch them, see which one converts best and stick with the winner. Creativity is no longer a one-off gamble but becomes an iterative process – which is exactly how performance-based advertising should work.

It also changes the division of tasks within the team. What used to hold a campaign up whilst waiting for a design or a production company can now be kicked off by the very person who manages the accounts. It doesn’t do away with the creative team — we’ll see that in a moment — but it does free up the first few hours of routine work.

The limitations nobody tells you about in the headline

We need to be honest here, because proper marketing is based on sound judgement, not just enthusiasm. Ten seconds of AI-generated video does not constitute a campaign. These are the precautions we take:

Mandatory human review. AI sometimes “makes up” details: a seam that isn’t there, a strange reflection, an unnatural movement in the product. In categories where accuracy matters (fashion, food, jewellery), a poorly generated clip can convey exactly the opposite of what you want.

The brand is still yours. Style, tone and message don’t just emerge from the template on their own. If you don’t provide direction, you’ll end up with a generic video that looks just like your competitors’. The brief is still key.

Transparency and regulations. From 2 August 2026, under the EU AI Act, there are transparency requirements regarding content generated or manipulated using AI. It is worth bearing this in mind before rolling out this type of creative work.

You’re still the one in charge. As we explained earlier when analysing the new Google Ads terms, the fact that the advert is generated by AI does not shift the responsibility to Google: it remains with the advertiser. Please check what you publish.

How we’re using it at Vandelay

Our approach is not simply to “generate for the sake of generating”. We use Veo as a catalyst within a process where important decisions are still made by human judgement. Specifically: we always start with real, well-lit product photos (input quality determines output quality), generate several variants with different messaging angles, ruthlessly discard those with strange artefacts, and only then set up the test campaign. Metrics are key: if an AI-generated clip doesn’t convert better than the creative we already had, it doesn’t make the cut.

This line of reasoning is consistent with what we have been arguing regarding the short-form video and its ROI: AI doesn’t replace strategy; it makes it cheaper to implement. And for an SME, that is precisely what opens the door to channels that were previously reserved for those who could afford a production company.

Frequently Asked Questions about Veo on Google Ads

How much does it cost to use Veo on Google Ads?

Video creation using Veo within Asset Studio is provided at no extra cost to the advertiser; as always, you pay for the campaign’s advertising spend, not for creating the advert.

How many images can I use, and how long is the video?

You can upload up to three still images, and Veo generates videos of up to 10 seconds with natural motion, designed for YouTube formats, according to Search Engine Land.

In which campaigns can I use these videos?

The clips are designed for YouTube and are suitable for campaigns where video plays a key role, such as Demand Gen and Performance Max. Once integrated into Asset Studio, they become available as creative assets within your account.

Is it safe for my brand?

This is the case if you retain human oversight. AI speeds up production, but the advertiser remains responsible for the content published and must comply with the transparency obligations under the EU AI Act where applicable.

If you’ve got a catalogue of photos sitting in a folder, now’s a good time to give it a go. Pick three products, create a couple of variations of each, and run them as a test against your current creatives. Within a week, the data will tell you whether Veo has a place in your account. And if you’d prefer us to guide you through that first test — from image selection to measurement — at Vandelay we’re already doing this with clients in Barcelona: drop us a line and we’ll set it up with you.

There is one marketing channel that many SMEs consider to be outdated, yet which continues to offer the best return on investment: email. In 2026, the AI-powered email marketing It is no longer simply a matter of «sending out a newsletter on Thursdays»; it has evolved into a system that automatically segments recipients, drafts subject lines, determines the best time to send the newsletter to each individual, and predicts who is likely to make a purchase and who is about to unsubscribe.

And the figures back this up. According to Omnisend, which analysed more than 27,000 million emails sent via its platform in 2025, the messages automated They accounted for just 2% of emails sent, but generated around 30% of email revenue. To put it another way: it is the small, automated part of email that generates the most revenue. That is where artificial intelligence is making a difference.

Why email is still winning (even though it may seem otherwise)

Every few months, someone declares that email is dead. And yet, year after year, it remains one of the most profitable channels in existence. According to the report by Litmus, the average return on email marketing stands at around $36 for every dollar invested. This is an average across sectors — it should be taken as a rough guide rather than a guarantee — but it gives an idea of why brands are so keen on it.

The underlying reason is simple: the email is yours. You don’t have to rely on a social media algorithm or an advertising auction to reach your audience. It’s a channel built on first-party data, precisely the asset that has gained the most value in the age of privacy. And when you add AI to the mix, that channel stops being just a newsletter and becomes a revenue generator that works whilst you sleep.

What exactly changes when you incorporate AI into email?

Artificial intelligence doesn’t «write the email for you» at the touch of a button. What it does is relieve you of repetitive decisions and those that require analysing large amounts of data at once. In practice, this is what it offers today:

Behavioural segmentation. Instead of a single list, the AI groups your contacts based on what they open, what they buy and when they stop engaging. Each group receives a different message.

Topics and texts. The built-in assistants on the main platforms suggest various versions of the subject line and body text, and learn which ones work best with your specific audience.

Optimal dispatch time per person. You don’t send emails to everyone at 10.00; the AI calculates the time at which each subscriber usually opens their emails.

Forecast of staff absences. Identify who is losing interest before they unsubscribe, so you can launch a reactivation campaign in good time.

None of these tasks are new. What is new is that you no longer need a team of analysts to carry them out: they are included in tools that an SME can afford.

The figure to keep in mind: 2% in shipments, 30% in revenue

Let’s go back to the Omnisend figure, because it sums up the whole strategy. According to that same analysis, automated emails — those that are triggered automatically in response to a customer action — delivered around 16 times more value per email than manually scheduled emails. It’s not magic: it’s simply that they arrive at the exact moment when the recipient’s interest is at its peak.

These are the three automated workflows that almost any business should have up and running before considering anything more sophisticated:

Welcome. The first email after signing up or making a first purchase. That’s when you have the most attention.

Abandoned shopping trolley. A reminder for anyone who added items to their basket but didn’t complete their purchase. In e-commerce, this is usually the most profitable customer journey.

After-sales. Follow-up, recommendations and requests for reviews. This is where repeat business is built, which is where the real profit lies.

AI is integrated into each one, fine-tuning the content, timing and target audience. You set them up once; they keep working for months.

Watch out for openings: they no longer mean what you thought they did

Here’s the awkward bit. If you keep measuring the success of your campaigns by the opening rate, you’re looking at a broken indicator. Ever since Apple introduced its Email Privacy Protection, the system preloads the images in emails — including the tracking pixel — even if the user does not actually open the message. As a result, the open rates appear inflated.

And this is no minor detail: a very high proportion of email opens now come from Apple Mail, according to various email delivery platforms. With so many «false positives», comparing your open rate against last year’s figures or against a supposed industry benchmark becomes unreliable.

What should you look at instead? Metrics that reflect genuine intent: clicks, conversions and revenue per email sent. It’s the same shift that other areas of marketing are already experiencing, where the The last click is no longer king when it comes to measurement. If a tool promises results based solely on page views, be wary.

How to get started with your SME without getting overwhelmed

You don’t need a list of 100,000 contacts or a master’s degree in automation. A realistic roadmap would look like this:

Organise your own database. Clear consent, minimal fields (what they bought, when, what they’re interested in) and GDPR compliance from day one.

Enable two or three workflows. Welcome, abandoned basket and post-purchase. That’s all for now.

Let AI personalise it. Use the built-in features of your platform to segment and refine your topics; you don’t need any fancy tools.

Measure by revenue, not by store openings. Set yourself a clear target: what percentage of your turnover do you want to come from email?.

Keep the human eye in mind. The AI makes suggestions; a person then checks the tone and branding, and ensures no nonsense slips through before it’s sent.

That last point is not just for show. The very logic of AI-powered hyper-personalisation Even magic can come across as impersonal or go wrong if no one is keeping an eye on it. The combination that works is automation plus judgement – not just one or the other.

Frequently asked questions about AI-powered email marketing

Will email marketing still work in 2026?

Yes. It remains one of the channels with the highest return on investment, according to data from Litmus, and AI-powered automated workflows account for a disproportionate share of revenue, according to Omnisend. What has changed is how it is measured and personalised, not its relevance.

Do I need a huge list for the AI to be useful?

No. AI adds value even with modest lists, because it segments and chooses the best time to send messages better than any manual rule. The quality and accuracy of the data are more important than its size.

Does AI write emails for me?

It drafts them and suggests different approaches, but the branding criteria and final review must be carried out by a human. It works best as a co-pilot rather than on autopilot.

And what about WhatsApp and other channels?

They coexist. Email is the channel you own and can use in the long term; messaging, as we saw when discussing AI-powered conversational marketing, deals with the immediate situation. A sensible strategy does not choose between them: it coordinates them.

If you take just one idea away from all this, let it be 2% and 30%. Most of the value of email lies not in the campaign you send to your entire list, but in the automated messages that reach the right person at the right time. Artificial intelligence hasn’t come along to reinvent email; it’s here to ensure you finally make the most of it. At Vandelay, we help SMEs in Barcelona set up exactly that: workflows that run themselves, measured by what really matters – revenue.

Google Analytics 4 now separates visits from AI assistants into a new ‘AI Assistant’ channel. We explain what it measures, its limitations and how to start using it this week in your SME.

If you run a website for an SME, you’ve probably already noticed: more and more people are landing on your site after asking ChatGPT or Gemini a question. The problem is that, until recently, those visits were lumped together in the «Referral» category in Google Analytics, anonymous and untraceable. That has just changed. The GA4 AI Assistant channel It’s Google’s answer to a question we’ve all been asking ourselves for months: how many people visit my website thanks to artificial intelligence?

According to reports Search Engine Journal, 14 May 2026, Google Analytics 4 has added a new default channel group called «AI Assistant», which automatically separates traffic from recognised AI assistants from other referral sources. No configuration is required. And although it may sound like a minor technical detail, for anyone who wants to understand where their customers are coming from in 2026, this is one of those updates worth keeping a close eye on.

What exactly is the GA4 AI Assistant channel?

The change affects three traffic source dimensions at once. When GA4 detects that a visit comes from a referrer (the source website), which is linked to a well-known AI assistant, does three things automatically, without the property owner having to do a thing:

Assign «ai-assistant» as the value of the medium (medium).

Group those sessions under the channel «AI Assistant» in the reports for the default channel group.

Tag the campaign dimension with a reserved value, «(ai-assistant)».

Google’s own documentation, cited by Search Engine Journal, describes the new feature as a way to «monitor how generative AI impacts your business, by tracking user clicks, trending AI sources and how that traffic compares to traditional channels such as organic search». In other words: you can finally compare AI traffic alongside your organic, direct and paid traffic, and analyse them using the same criteria.

Why this matters to your SME

Until this update, all AI chatbot traffic was automatically categorised under the «Referral» bucket, mixed in with links from blogs, directories and any other websites linking to yours. To view this separately, you had to create a custom channel group using regular expressions (regex), keep it updated every time a platform changed its domain, and, on top of that, GA4 only allows two custom groups: dedicating one of those two slots to AI was a real cost.

Now that traffic is coming in all by itself. And it’s arriving at a time when keeping it hidden is no longer an option. At Vandelay, we’ve been tracking this across real accounts: the AI-generated traffic performs significantly better than other sources, according to the Adobe Analytics data we analysed a few weeks ago. If that channel is performing well but you don’t even know how to measure it, you’re making budget decisions more or less blindly.

Which voice assistants it recognises (and which ones are still unclear)

Here, we need to be honest about what we know and what we don’t. Google has not published the full list of recognised chatbots. Its Help Centre mentions ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude merely as examples. I cannot confirm which others are included, nor how that list will be updated as new platforms emerge.

For reference, in August 2025 Google published a guide to creating custom channel groups which listed five platforms to keep an eye on: ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Claude and Perplexity. However, that list was for the old manual method; it does not necessarily correspond to the coverage provided by the new automated system. It’s worth bearing this in mind before assuming that «all» your AI is covered.

The blind spot that nobody should ignore

The AI Assistant channel is good news, but it’s not a silver bullet. It has limitations that completely change how you should interpret the figures:

1. Without referrer, there is no channel. The new group only captures what GA4 can identify via the header referrer. When that header is missing — which is common in in-app browsers, mobile apps or when the user copies and pastes the link — the session is still classified as «Direct». In other words, a significant proportion of your organic traffic will continue to be misclassified as direct, and there is currently no straightforward way to recover it.

2. Google’s own AI is taking a different approach. This distinction is crucial and is easily misunderstood. Traffic coming from the search engine’s own AI features — the AI Overviews and AI Mode— is counted as organic search, not as an AI Assistant. In fact, last year Google fixed a bug that caused traffic from AI Mode to be reported as «direct» rather than «organic». For many businesses, this is probably the biggest source of AI traffic… and it still doesn’t appear labelled as «AI» in the standard report.

3. The data is not backdated. GA4 processes data prospectively. You won’t see this channel populated with your historical data: it will only contain visits that occur after the feature is activated on your property.

This isn’t the first time Google has redirected traffic from a generic ad group to its own channel without asking for permission: in 2022, it did the same when it created the «cross-network» channel for Performance Max and Smart Shopping. The pattern is repeating itself, and it usually means that the category is here to stay.

How to start using it this week

You don’t need a three-month analytics project to get the most out of it. Here are the steps we follow at Vandelay when setting up an account:

Find the channel. Log in to GA4 at Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition, and check the breakdown by the default channel group. If this feature is already enabled for your property, «AI Assistant» will appear alongside Organic Search, Direct, Referral and Paid.

Compare – don’t just focus on the figure in isolation. Put AI Assistant alongside your organic and direct traffic. What’s interesting isn’t the raw volume, but the trend and the quality: how do these people compare to the rest?

Cross-check it with Search Console. The GA4 channel tracks clicks that lead to your website; it does not cover what happens within the search engine. Combine it with the Search Console generative AI report to capture both sides: impressions within the AI and visits originating from it.

Track your conversions. Make sure that traffic has clearly defined conversion events. If you don’t track forms, calls or sales, the channel will only tell you how many people are visiting, not how many are buying from you.

Keep a personalised support group. As the list of supported platforms is neither public nor complete, maintain your channel group using regular expressions to capture any that are not included (for example, Perplexity if your property does not support it natively).

Measuring is the first step, not the strategy

It’s worth keeping your expectations in line with reality here. Having a new channel in GA4 doesn’t mean ChatGPT or Gemini will recommend you more. It simply shows you what’s already happening. For those assistants to mention your business, you need to work on your visibility within the generative engines themselves – which is a different ball game to traditional SEO. If you’re interested in that aspect, we cover it in our guide on Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO).

The bigger picture is easy to summarise: AI is already a measurable customer acquisition channel, and from now on you have fewer excuses to ignore it. For an SME in Barcelona competing for local customers, starting to look into this channel this week — even if the volume is still small — is the difference between reacting in time and finding out too late, when the competition has already been optimising for it for months.

Frequently Asked Questions about the GA4 AI Assistant channel

Do I need to configure anything to enable the GA4 AI Assistant channel?

No. According to Google’s documentation, as reported by Search Engine Journal, the channel is assigned automatically when GA4 detects a referrer from a recognised AI assistant. It does not require any configuration by the property owner.

Does traffic from the AI Overviews appear on this channel?

No. Traffic from AI Overviews and the AI Mode in the Google search engine is counted as organic search, not under the AI Assistant channel. This channel primarily captures visits from external chatbots such as ChatGPT or Gemini.

Why do I keep seeing AI traffic under «Live»?

Because when a visitor arrives without a letterhead referrer —which is common in mobile apps, built-in browsers or when copying and pasting a link— GA4 cannot identify its source and classifies it as «Direct». The AI Assistant channel only captures what it can recognise from the referrer.

Every time someone searches on Google, there is a greater chance that the first result will not be a blue link, but a paragraph written by artificial intelligence. That block is called AI Overview (AI-generated views, on the Spanish-language interface) and is probably the most far-reaching change to search since SEO first came into existence. The question our clients in Barcelona ask us almost every day is straightforward: if Google answers for me, does it still make sense to invest in search engine optimisation? The short answer is yes, but with a few changes to the rules. Understanding how Google’s AI Overviews work and how much traffic they’re taking away from you is now essential for any SME, and that’s what this article is about.

What are Google AI Overviews?

The Google AI Overviews These are summaries generated by the Gemini models that appear at the top of the results to answer a query without the user having to visit any websites. They gather information from various sources, summarise it in a few lines and, below that, provide links to some of the pages cited. It’s convenient for the user. For those who rely on organic traffic, this is a shift in the landscape that should be understood through data rather than alarmist headlines.

They do not appear in all searches. They are triggered mainly by informational queries — the typical «how», «what is» and «why» queries — and much less frequently by transactional or brand-related searches. That distinction, which we’ll look at below, is what makes the difference between panicking and adjusting your strategy.

How much traffic is actually lost: the figures

This is where we need to be honest and rely on sound research, not on gut feelings. Two of the most frequently cited sources in the sector agree on the general direction, even though they measure different things.

The first is a Ahrefs’ study of 300,000 keywords. By comparing the CTR (click-through rate) before and after the roll-out of AI Overviews in the United States, they found that the presence of an AI Overview is associated with a 34.51 TP3T fewer clicks for the page in first position in informational searches. In other words: you can still be number one and lose one in every three clicks you used to receive.

The second is a research by the Pew Research Centre published in July 2025, which analysed the actual browsing behaviour of 900 adults in the United States. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked on a result in just 8% of visits, opposite the 15% when there was no summary. Furthermore, only 1% users clicked on any of the links included within the summary itself, and 26% users ended their browsing session there (compared with 16% users who did not view the AI View).

Metric

No AI Overview

With AI Overview

Click on a result (Pew Research)

15% of visits

8% of visits

CTR for position 1, informational (Ahrefs)

Reference

−34.5%

A session that ends on the results page (Pew)

16%

26%

The overall picture is clear: when there is an AI summary, there are fewer clicks through to websites. This isn’t an opinion; it’s what the data shows. However, to go from there to claiming that «SEO is dead» is a leap that the studies themselves do not support.

Why this doesn’t mean that SEO is dead

It’s worth bearing three things in mind before making any hasty decisions about your budget.

Firstly, AI Overviews do not cover all searches. They focus on the informational part of the funnel. When someone is ready to buy, hire or request a quote — «physiotherapist near me», «marketing agency in Barcelona», «kitchen renovation cost» — the AI summary appears much less frequently, and that’s where clicking remains the norm. These are also the searches that actually drive conversions for an SME.

Secondly, being cited in the AI View is also valuable. Even if the click rate drops, being the source Google chooses to provide an answer reinforces your authority and your brand. In fact, the traffic that does come from AI-powered platforms tends to be more qualified: users arrive with their query already resolved and closer to making a decision.

Thirdly, search engines aren’t your only showcase. Searches no longer take place solely on Google, which is why we’re also working to improve our clients’ visibility on chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. We explain this in detail in our guide on GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation), the discipline that aims precisely to get AI to mention your business.

How to regain visibility when Google AI Overviews are in use

The aim is no longer simply «to be number one». It is to be useful to the user, citable by AI, and visible at the very moment someone is about to make a decision. This is what we are putting into practice and what we recommend.

1. Refocus the content on commercial and local objectives

If your blog relies solely on purely informative articles, it’s time to readjust your focus. Prioritise pages that cater to commercial and local search intent: services, case studies, comparisons, «near me». These are the ones least affected by AI summarisation and the ones that bring in customers. For a business in Barcelona, a well-crafted Google Business Profile and geolocated content are still worth their weight in gold.

2. Structure your content so that AI can cite you

Language models extract information more effectively when it is organised: a clear and direct answer in the first paragraph, headings that pose genuine questions, lists, tables and specific data with their sources. Write to provide answers, not to pad out the text. Paradoxically, the content that ranks highest in AI Views is the content that shows the greatest respect for the reader.

3. Highlight what Google can’t summarise: your brand and your own channels

An AI-generated summary may be able to paraphrase a piece of information, but it cannot replicate trust in a brand, an email list of your customers or a social media community. Investing in brand awareness, email marketing and direct engagement reduces your reliance on organic clicks. The more people search for you by name, the less it matters if you lose clicks from generic searches.

4. Measure the actual impact using Search Console

Before cutting back on anything out of fear, take a look at your own figures. Google already shows your impressions within AI-generated views and AI Mode: check which queries are generating clicks, which are only generating impressions, and where you’re losing ground. We explain how to interpret this in the article on the Generative AI report in Search Console. Making decisions based on your own data is always better than reacting to a headline.

What we’re doing at Vandelay

Together with our clients, we’ve moved away from viewing search ranking as a race for the number one spot and have started to measure something broader: presence. That includes the traditional ranking, yes, but also whether you’re cited by AI-powered search results, whether a chatbot recommends you, and how much traffic from those sources ultimately converts. In fact, the data suggests that this AI traffic performs significantly better than the rest, so losing a few clicks on informative content along the way isn’t always bad news if, in return, you gain visibility where decisions are made.

Google’s AI Overviews aren’t going to disappear; they’re here to stay. The sensible thing to do is neither to resist nor to resign yourself to it, but to adjust your strategy with a cool head and the data to hand. Those who realise first that search has changed — and act accordingly — will be the ones who continue to appear when their customers ask a question, whether they do so on Google or ask an AI directly. If you want to know exactly how this is affecting your website, that’s precisely the sort of analysis we carry out every week; get in touch and we’ll take a look at your actual figures.

Global advertising spend is set to reach nearly $1.06 trillion in 2026 and grow by 5%, according to Dentsu. We analyse the data by channel, explain what the 'algorithmic era' is, and look at how an SME in Barcelona should allocate its budget.

If you run an SME and are deciding how much to invest in advertising next year, there’s one figure you should bear in mind: global advertising spend is set to grow by 5.0% in 2026 and will reach 1.06 trillion dollars, according to Dentsu’s latest forecast published on 27 May 2026. This represents slower growth than the 5.8% recorded in 2025, but it remains higher than the growth rate of the global economy (3.1% according to the IMF). In other words: brands continue to invest in advertising, even against a backdrop of economic uncertainty.

That said, the headline isn’t just how much it is reversed, but where y who decides that expenditure. And that’s where 2026 gets interesting for any business, whatever its size. At Vandelay, as a digital marketing agency in Barcelona, we sum it up like this: money is moving towards digital, towards e-commerce and towards algorithms. Let’s take it one step at a time.

How much will advertising spend grow in 2026: the key figures

Dentsu’s forecast (Global Ad Spend Forecasts, mid-year update, 56 markets analysed) reveals several figures worth noting:

+5.0% global growth in 2026 and a projected +5.51 TP3T for 2027.

1.06 trillion dollars of global advertising expenditure in 2026. The one trillion mark was surpassed in 2025, a year earlier than expected.

It Digital now accounts for 69% of the total investment across the 56 markets analysed.

By region, EMEA (which includes Spain) is set to grow by 3.61 per cent in the third quarter, compared with 4.8% for the Americas and 5.9% for Asia-Pacific.

Events such as the FIFA World Cup, the Winter Olympic Games and the US mid-term elections will act as a catalyst for spending.

The fact that the EMEA region is growing at a slower rate than other regions is not necessarily bad news for a Spanish SME: it means that the market is competitive but mature, and that it is execution – not just budget – that makes the difference. A well-optimised local business can gain ground without needing to match the financial resources of a multinational.

The “algorithmic age”: by 2028, three out of every four euros will be decided by an algorithm

The figure that gives us most food for thought is this: Dentsu forecasts that by By 2028, 75% of advertising spend will be “algorithm-driven”, that is to say, managed by systems in which the algorithm plays a decisive role in the purchasing process. Google Performance Max, Meta’s Advantage+ campaigns and automated bidding are examples that we already use on a daily basis.

What does this mean in practice? It means that the advertiser’s role is shifting. It is no longer so much about manually setting bids and targeting, but rather about feed the machine properly: high-quality first-party data, varied creative assets, well-defined conversion goals and clean signals. The algorithm optimises what you feed it; if you feed it noise, it optimises noise.

For an SME, this has both a positive side and a caveat. The positive aspect: automation makes capabilities that previously required a large team accessible to organisations on modest budgets. The warning: if you don’t understand what you’re asking the system to do or how to measure the results, it’s easy to blow your budget without realising why. Delegating to the algorithm is not the same as turning a blind eye.

Where is the growth: retail media, connected video and social media

Not all channels grow at the same rate. According to Dentsu’s own forecast, these are the ones showing the strongest growth:

Channel

Forecast growth for 2026

What does this mean for your business?

Retail media

+12,3%

Advertise on e-commerce platforms (marketplaces, online shops) where customers are already shopping.

Connected TV (CTV)

+11,5%

Connected TV and ad-supported streaming: television reach with digital targeting.

Digital video

+8,7%

The format that’s gaining the most traction, including the short videos that are already dominating social media.

Full video

+5,1%

The combined total of cable TV and digital TV offsets a flat-screen linear TV (0.0%).

Search

+3,4%

Growth is slowing because AI, retail and social media are competing with traditional search engines.

The rise of the retail media This confirms a shift towards what Dentsu calls “commerce-led media”: advertising is becoming increasingly closely aligned with the exact moment of purchase. And the video, in all its forms, remains the key tool for brand building. If your SME isn’t yet producing short videos on a regular basis, this is the year to start: you no longer need an expensive film shoot to establish a respectable online presence.

Search engines are changing: why you need a “comprehensive search strategy”

The fact that search volume is only growing by 3.4% does not mean that SEO is any less important. It means that the search has become fragmented. People no longer just search on Google: they ask ChatGPT, look for products on Amazon, discover brands on TikTok and ask AI assistants for recommendations. Dentsu aptly calls this the need for a “total search strategy”.

This ties in with something we’ve been explaining on the blog for months: the GEO (optimisation for generative engines), in other words, working to ensure that ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity mention your business is no longer the stuff of science fiction. It’s part of the very same strategy we used to call SEO. In fact, Google already lets you see how you appear in its AI responses via the Generative AI report in Search Console. Ignoring this area today is like having ignored mobile phones fifteen years ago.

What does all this mean for an SME’s budget?

Major reports are designed for large advertisers, but trends trickle down. If we were to translate this data into specific decisions for a small or medium-sized business, they would be as follows:

1. No cuts to digital; rebalance within digital

With 69% of investment already going into digital channels, the question is not “Should I invest online?”, but “In what mix?”. Check whether you’re over-reliant on a single channel (for example, Meta Ads only) and set aside a portion of your budget to try out video or retail media if you sell products.

2. Prepare your data before your campaigns

If the algorithm is going to make more and more of the decisions, your competitive advantage will lie in the data you provide: a clean customer list, a properly configured pixel, and conversions that measure what really matters to your bottom line. It’s not the most glamorous of tasks, but it’s what separates a profitable campaign from one that simply burns through your budget.

3. Treat search as an ecosystem, not as a channel

Spread your efforts across traditional SEO, a presence on marketplaces where relevant, and visibility on AI assistants. You don’t need to focus on all of them with the same intensity, but you do need to know where people are looking for you you customer.

4. Start making videos, even if they’re not perfect

Video is the fastest-growing format and the one that best builds a brand in the medium term. Posting consistently is more important than producing perfect content.

Frequently asked questions about advertising expenditure in 2026

How much will global advertising expenditure grow by 2026?

5.0% compared with 2025, reaching around 1.06 trillion dollars, according to Dentsu’s May 2026 forecast. This represents slightly slower growth than the 5.8% recorded in 2025, but it still exceeds the forecast growth of the global economy (3.1%).

What is “algorithm-driven” advertising?

This refers to investment managed by automated systems in which the algorithm plays a decisive role in media buying (such as Performance Max or Advantage+). Dentsu forecasts that it will account for 75% of global advertising spend in 2028.

Which advertising channels are growing the most?

Retail media (+12.3%), connected TV (CTV) (+11.5%) and digital video (+8.7%) are set to lead growth in 2026. Traditional search is slowing to +3.41% Q3-on-Q3 due to competition from AI, marketplaces and social media.

Should an SME increase its budget in 2026?

There is no single answer: it depends on your profit margins, your sector and your objectives. The data suggests maintaining or increasing your digital investment and, above all, improving how it is allocated and measured. We cannot confirm an ideal figure without analysing your specific situation.

The picture for 2026 is not one of a market that is cooling off, but of one that is reorganising itself: more digital, more commerce, more automation. For a small brand, the good news is that the very same tools used by the big players are now within your reach; the bad news is that it’s no longer enough simply to “be” online – you have to do it well. If you’d like us to review together how your budget is allocated and where you have scope to grow without overspending, at Vandelay We help you put a figure on your strategy.

There’s one question that comes up at almost every results meeting and which, until now, didn’t have a clear answer: «Does my Instagram or TikTok content drive traffic from Google?» We suspected it did. Profiles and videos appear in search results, in carousels and on Discover. But measuring this was impossible, because Instagram Insights only tells you what’s happening within Instagram, whilst Search Console only provided data for your domain.

On 7 July 2026, Google closed that gap. The platform properties in Search Console They are a new type of feature that allows you to check and analyse Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube profiles, and see which searches lead to that content within Google Search and Discover.

The short answer, for those in a hurry: you can add your social media profile as a property in Search Console, verify it via an on-screen authorisation, and view clicks, impressions and queries for your social media posts in the Performance, Statistics and Achievements reports. The roll-out is taking place gradually.

What exactly are platform properties in Search Console?

Until now, Search Console had two types of property: domain and URL prefix. Both required something obvious: that you were the technical owner of the site. You could prove this with a DNS record, an HTML file or a tag in the code.

Platform features defy that logic. Google explained it as follows on its developer blog:

«We’re excited to introduce platform properties, a new type of property in Search Console designed to help site owners and creators understand how their social and video posts perform in Google Search and Discover.»

In practical terms: you no longer need to access the instagram.com server to view search data for your Instagram profile. You verify that the account is yours by authorising the connection via the platform itself, and Google then returns the performance metrics for that content in its search engine.

The four platforms supported at launch are Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube. Google has not announced, in the documentation we have consulted, when or if this will be extended to other networks.

What reports are included?

According to the official documentation, the data relating to a platform property is divided across three locations:

Performance Report. Total clicks, impressions and related metrics. You can filter and sort the data to see which posts and specific search queries generate the most traffic, and export the data if you’d prefer to analyse it in another tool.

Statistics Report (Insights). An overview: recent traffic trends, top-performing posts and how people discover your account on Google.

Achievements. Growth milestones, such as exceeding a threshold for total clicks from Search over the last 28 days.

It is worth pausing to consider one detail that sets this apart from the Generative AI report in Search Console which we looked at a few days ago: there, Google was showing impressions but no No clicks or enquiries. Here, enquiries and clicks do appear. It’s data that’s more actionable right from day one.

How to verify your profile, step by step

The process described by Google is brief:

Open Search Console.

Go to the property verification page, or open the property selector from any screen and tap «Add property».

Select one of the four available platforms: Instagram, TikTok, X or YouTube.

Follow the verification steps on the screen to authorise the connection securely.

An important reminder before anyone wastes an afternoon: Google has indicated that the platform features will be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks to the advert. If you don’t see the option, it’s most likely that it hasn’t reached you yet. As confirmed by Daniel Waisberg from Google on X on 12 July, the first to gain access were those who already had Search Profiles.

Nor should this feature be confused with Search Profiles or the former «social channels» section that appeared in Search Console Insights in 2025. They are different things, even though they overlap conceptually.

Why this matters more than it seems

For years, we’ve treated SEO and social media as two departments that merely exchange pleasantries down the corridor. Each has its own tools, reports and definition of success. Platform properties bring both worlds together on the same screen, and that’s forcing us to change some of our internal discussions.

Three specific implications that we are already seeing:

A TikTok video can serve as a landing page. If you find that a search with commercial intent consistently leads to one of your Reels rather than your website, you have two options: treat that social media content as carefully as you would a landing page, or create the page that should be filling that gap. Both are strategic decisions, not editorial calendar decisions.

Social media content is no longer considered ephemeral for measurement purposes. A post that performs well in search continues to drive traffic months after it’s been published. That changes the calculation of how much it’s worth producing it properly.

Attribution is improving, but it won’t sort itself out. Tracking clicks from Google to your TikTok is useful. Whether that click resulted in a sale still depends on your own tracking system, because the journey continues outside of Search Console. It’s a step forward in terms of visibility, not a complete attribution solution. We’ve already discussed this pitfall when analysing why The search is taking place everywhere today, not just on Google.

What to do this week if you have access

Check your four profiles. Even if a platform seems insignificant to you, the cost of verification is zero and the history only starts to build up once you log in.

Export and save a baseline. Before making any changes to your content strategy, set out your starting point in writing. Without it, any subsequent increase will be merely an anecdote, not a measurable result.

Cross-reference social media enquiries with enquiries from your website. That’s the interesting bit. If a search brings clicks to your Instagram profile but your website isn’t ranking for that search, there’s a page you’re missing.

Check who has permissions. You are authorising Search Console to connect to your company’s social media accounts. Decide in advance who will manage this access, particularly if you work with external agencies or freelancers.

Don’t overhaul your strategy based on just two weeks’ worth of data. It’s the classic temptation every time a new report comes out. Let the series develop.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be the owner of the social media domain?

No. That is precisely the change. Verification is carried out by authorising the connection from the platform itself, rather than by proving ownership of the domain. This is the first time Search Console has allowed the verification of content hosted on third-party domains.

Does it include data from Google Discover?

Yes. Google states that platform properties cover the performance of social and video posts in both Search and Discover.

Do specific search queries appear?

According to the official description in the Performance report, yes: you can filter and sort the data to identify which posts and which queries generate the most traffic. We have not been able to verify from the documentation we have consulted whether the same privacy filters that hide low-volume queries in standard web properties apply here, although this would be expected.

Is this for Facebook or LinkedIn?

No, at least not today. The platforms announced are Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube. We cannot confirm any plans for expansion because Google has not disclosed them in the sources we have reviewed.

Does it replace the native analytics features of each network?

No, and it’s important to be clear about this. Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube will continue to be the primary sources of data on what happens within their apps: reach, saves and watch time. Search Console only covers the portion of traffic coming from Google.

What we’ll be keeping an eye on

We’re interested in two things between now and the end of the year. Firstly, whether Google will expand the list of platforms: if LinkedIn were to be included, the impact on B2B brands would be considerable. Secondly, whether this data will eventually be integrated with generative AI reports, because at present they are separate reports and the real question for any brand is simply this: where are people finding me – whether via a blue link, an AI summary or a vertical video?.

In the meantime, the advice is the same as always when new data becomes available: connect it straight away, even if you don’t yet know what you’re going to do with it. Historical data cannot be retrieved retrospectively. Anyone who connects it today will have six months’ worth of context by January; anyone who does so in January will have an empty graph.

At Vandelay We have been working for some time on the intersection between SEO, social media content and visibility in generative engines, precisely because the boundaries between channels have become blurred. If you’d like us to review how your brand is presented across each of these areas and what content is underpinning that presence, please get in touch.
